PR pros mess up, President jokes as a result

I wrote about it before. In my opinion, not giving President Obama an honorary degree was a blunder. Obama’s graduation speech was great. Listen at the 27 second mark of the video. Obama makes a joke – the question – is this a direct joke about not receiving an honorary degree or about ASU winning a game in the basketball tournament?

Be careful of your blunders, the President might even take shots at them.

It was a fabulous speech, as usual. And riffing on ASU’s PR blunder was icing on the cake. Especially satisfying was The Daily Show’s segment. Kim Campbell, who has been a speaker on our campus, was a good sport about it, though. Now, why isn’t B.O. on our speaker list?

I’d like to point out that it’s not always the PR pros who are to blame for a PR blunder. In an organization as large as ASU, I’m sure the information funneled down to the PR person and him/her was doing the best job they could w/ the information they had. Sometimes, the LEADERS are the ones to blame for a PR blunder.

Leah – I agree with you PR pros are not always to blame for PR blunders. I’m sure it has happened to all of us where someone else in the org. messes up and it really reflects poorly on the pr pros who are trying to clean things up.

I have suffered the damaging effects of PR blunder that wasn’t my fault. I will not go into detail, but let’s just say, people are more inclined to listen to my professional opinion now.
