Media relations: Be a Resource

I’ve been thinking about media relations a lot lately.

Looking around the blogosphere I stumbled on Flack Rabbit. The blog post discussed media relations. The post said attitude and approach are key factors in media relations. If you are arrogant towards a reporter, you may be exposed all over the internet.

Next I came across David Mulllen’s blog post “Five Tips for Media Relations Success.”  This is a really good post on media relations from someone who has landed a couple thousand stories. One of his five tips is to be a resource. I couldn’t agree more.

I met with a journalist today. The journalist was telling me about her relationship with other PR pros. She told me there is one PR pro that is very arrogant and pushy. She then went on to say  that she has no intentions on ever working with that PR pro again.

It doesn’t matter if you’re a new pro or a seasoned vet. Remember the basics. Be a resource for a reporter. Don’t over do it. Fulfill the media request while treating the journalists like you want to be treated.

It is simple and easy to be a reliable resource, but somehow PR pros continue to give each other bad names.

Brian – thanks for extending the conversation to your place and for highlighting my post. Glad you liked it.

You’re absolutely right. The basics are often overlooked. We’d do ourselves, our clients and reporters a favor by making sure we’ve covered off on those.

Hi Brian, thanks for including my thoughts in your post. I just always so surprised at how many media relations folks seem to have a disdain for – or at least a gross misunderstanding of – the media. Odd, really.

    Great post. – @margienewman
