Is a vacation really a vacation when you’re a PR Pro?

Whether you stayed at home or traveled for Thanksgiving, chances are you had two days off to celebrate the holiday with loved ones. If you’re like me, you also checked your e-mail about 3.5 times per day while off.

In 2005, AOL released a study saying people check their e-mail five times per day. Obviously this statistic is out of date and not directly related to people checking work e-mail, but if people checked their e-mail that much back then, imagine how many times they check it per day today. There’s an ongoing discussion at Cozay Forum on the amount of times per day people check their e-mail.  Some posters stated they check their e-mail as much as 30 to 35 times per day.

As a PR professional, I check my e-mail on vacation (and after hours during the work week) for a few different reasons. The first is for any media requests. I might not be able to respond directly to the inquiry, but at least I can put the reporter in touch with someone who can. Next, if I check my e-mail now, then I can get in front of it for the day I return back to work. Usually the first day back to work is filled with catching up and attending meetings.

Are PR pros addicted to their e-mails? Is it because we care so much or is it because e-mails can be easily accessible via iPhone and BlackBerry? I don’t have a Blackberry or an iPhone, yet I share the characteristics of others, checking e-mails after hours and on vacation.

Even though I work at home and not the office, I am completely addicted to checking my emails. Even on “vacation”…which kinda isn’t realistic for a person who works at home. I have my Blackberry near me, a laptop downstairs, the PC upstairs. Can’t escape it. I even check it when I am out and about. sometimes during movies…sometimes during dinners with friends…and even peaked yesterday during church! 🙁

I’m right there with you. I don’t have a Blackberry or an iPhone, but I check email whenever I can. We work in an industry that never takes a break. We go on vacation, but the issues, news stories, blog posts and inquiries find their way into our inbox all the time.

    Jay –

You’re so right. The bottom line, just because we’re on vacation doesn’t mean our inbox will stand still.
